Down to the final four
Jeanne and Ashley go head to head in a two-hole match to start off Big Break V Hawaii - Episode 11 on The Golf Channel, by whose courtesy we present these images from the cablecast.
Among Jeanne, Ashley, Julie and Kim, it's a random draw to determine the makeup of two matches, a straightup elimination challenge. Losers of the two-hole matches head to it, winners get to breathe easy for the remainder of the show.
It's contested on the 5th and 6th holes on the Palmer course, two par fours.
What's with the awful and distracting earrings on Ashley?
They must be magic, Prange wins with a tap-in birdie on the second hole.
In her match, Julie hits a crummy drive, is left with 160 to the hole in the wind. Tough shot, she's got a wood out, hooks it up onto the green.
Kim from 147, not as close. Her aggressive putt goes by many feet.
Julie pulls her birdie, Kim sinks hers for par, and they're tied going to the second and final hole.
Julie...second shot out of the rough, leaves her with a long putt.
Kim; Door's open, but her shot is long and is off the green. Her follow-up pitch is long.
Julie's lag is 2.5 feet short. Kim leaves the long come-backer short!
Bogey's don't cut it on the Big Break V.
Thus, the two most obnoxious of the contestants are moving on, and one of the two remaining nice girls is fated to head home at the end of this episode.
"I'm here to friggin' win this thing," Julie says.
Friggin'?
Kim and Jeanne, roommates, have to go to the elimination challenge.
Elimination match covers 16 and 17 on the Palmer course.
Jeanne's drive heads into the bunker.
Kim's drive is true down left side of fairway.
Jeanne is kicking herself and is in the bunker, deep and no chance to get to the hole. She pitches out to within 100 yards.
Kim is around 130 yards and safely on in two, but with a great distance left.
Terrible thought: Man, if this whole thing comes down to Ashley and Julie, who really cares? Reminds one of the Match Play Championships, where fans are rooting for T Dub vs. Lefty, and instead are treated to Sutherland v. whatisname.
That's golf.
Back from commercial, Jeanne, thinking up and down from 105 yards off the green, hits her second shot just on, way short.
Kim again hits it long and outside of three feet.
Jeanne lags hers close for a bogus.
Kim, chance to pull one ahead, is looking at something close to four feet and pulls it, lipping out. Disastrous bogey, leaving it tied heading to the next hole.
Jeanne: "I was pumped going to the last hole. I was thinking the whole time, I was going to have to step up and do something on 17 or I'm going home for sure."
Kim describes herself as upset after blowing the golden opportunity.
No. 17 is an intimidating hole, bunkers everwhere, 375 yards long.
Jeanne smokes her drive, putting pressure back on Kim. She looks anxious over the ball, stripes another drive and both are within feet of each other.
They are around 136 yards to the hole, lots of bunkers between them and an elevated green. Kim, first to strike, is in between 8 and 9 irons. Taking the 9 out, she comes up short, a few inches off the green Jeanne picks a spot right of the green, is much longer, but on.
Kim pulls out the putter, kills it again and leaves herself with at least five feet for the par.
Jeanne (all of 'em are wearing a ton of makeup now, one notices) backs off her putt, takes an aggressive line, leaves herself with a four-footer. "I'm not going to worry about what Kim does, I'm just going to make this putt," Jeanne says.
Kim pulls the putt, disparaging her "durn putter" and clearly looks like someone who realizes they are gong home.
Jeanne, four-footer, Hawaii trades blowing, lines up the putt, hits it firm, eliminating her friend.
"I've never been so relieved after hitting a putt," she says.
For Kim, now comes that Big Break you're outta here them music and the long walk off the course.
"It was nice to have that competitive edge back," the mother of two says.
"I hope I can bring to the moms out there watching, that if you have a dream, if you have a family, you can do both."
She'll be missed, more than can be said for some of the remaining competitors.
