So, no sooner do we wax rhapsodic about the safety and calm of said Kahalu'u Beach Park, than news comes from from the local paper about a tiger shark sighting that same day not too far away.
It caused quite a stir, forced the closure of the Keahou bay, and Kahalu'u to swimmers and prompted the posting of warning signs (above pictured fish is potential tiger shark food, not the shark itself).
A 10-foot tiger shark was spotted in Keahou bay near the mouth, the state Department of land and Natural Resources and Fire Department authorities were notified, according to West Hawaii Today in the Sunday, Dec. 30 edition.
As the popular snorkel spot is a short distance away, it was closed too as a safety precaution.
It's not an unusual event, the paper reports.
Kahalu'u was closed five months ago after a six-footer was spotted in the area by a surfing instructor, and there have been numerous sightings along the Kohala Coast in late August.
