I am so grateful to have had an oceanfront, clean condo decorated in decor that is warm & comfortable. We were very happy here. Also the bigger size bed sure helped us after an exhaustive flight & the shower was a delight. The dolphins & whales were a highlight to swim with. Our deepest appreciation.

The Big Island in September

They call it “Kona” for a reason: it’s Hawaiian for leeward and why this part of the  Big Island enjoys some of the best conditions for snorkeling, diving and boating and other outdoor activities.

Which means there is not a whole lot of variation in the climate from month to month. Come in May, look for a temperature range from the high 60s at night to the mid 80s during the day. July through October, the daytime highs average in the upper 80s.

Of course, the nice thing about a stay at Kona Isle D21, is, if you get a little warm at sea level, you can always take a cooling dip in the pool, or even hop in your car and drive up in elevation.  Heck, you’ll need a parka for a trip up Mauna Kea.

If you’re not a big fan of crowds, September is a great month to visit. And since Hawaii is the biggest of all the Hawaiian Islands, there is no shortage of real estate public and private to lose yourself in.

Though things quiet down a touch in September (before “busy season” that brings the nutty triathletes of October and showbirds and whale watchers through March), there are still plenty of organized activities.

Check out the GoHawaii.com website for a complete list that ranges from Aloha Friday’s on the Porch in Puna to John Keawe at the Kings Shops of Waikoloa.

We see there’s bit of an opening for five days beginning September 14. After that, it’s a long wait until June before our happy little home away from home is available again.

p.s. If you’re wobbling at all about a peaceful Hawaiian holiday at Kona Isle, the owners of D21 have been there recently to improve, tidy up and such. As a result, they’ve fallen in love with their oceanfront all over again. If they see any big blank spots staring ‘em in the face, they’re liable to book ‘em all up for themselves ;)

If you're not in shape for this ride, you will be once you've taken the 115 mile journey through parts of the same route taken by Ironman competitors. It's set for August 2-4 and you can learn more here. Oh yeah, and special code of HHGUEST lets you register for free and you must have raised at least $300 to participate.

Photo Craft, originally based in Honolulu, can be found on the Web at allnaturalaccents.com. The site's operators say they closed the retail store in 2012, but since then have offered their products online. Here's YouTube video link showing one of their fine products.

There's something about the Hawaiian Islands that inspires people to take pen in hand and capture their thoughts (A real pen fer cryin' out loud, not some beastly gadget!). Those fortunate enough to remember and treasure books are blessed by little discoveries such as the tome pictured above.

"Traveling Hawaiian Byways with Pen and Camera" are extracts from a 1936 logbook by a great American, agricultural marketer and learned man of letters named Ross H. Gast. At the behest of the University of Hawaii, Mr. Gast was among those experts whose goal, according to press accounts he cites, of helping the islanders fashion a self-sustainable food supply.


We picked up this copy of Mr. Gast's reminisces during a tour of the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.


(The InterWeb points us to Gast's bio of a colorful post-contact character by the name of Don Francisco de Paula Marin)

Six months into Gast's assignment, he became manager of the Inter Island Steamship Company Grower Service Department and then eventually returned to California.

In between, we are left with his musings inspired by his boyhood idol Mark Twain, who, he noted first popularized the Hawaiian Islands as a tourist destination while in the employ of the Sacramento Union newspaper in 1866.

Among the book's little gems are the observance that Twain once embarked on a plan to write a novel with Hawaii as its setting, but alas, it was never finished.

Twain's lone opportunity to return to the islands was thwarted in 1895. He had promised to lecture there during the course of a late life assignment to tour Australia, but  like other shipmates, was barred from setting foot on the island because of a cholera epidemic.

Twain's wrote in "Following the Equator"that instead he could only gaze at Oahu from offshore: "If I could." Twain wrote, "I would have gone ashore and never left."

Twain died in 1910, without having the opportunity to return to his "Paradise of the Pacific."
