The 2023 Weddell seal pupping season in Erebus Bay, Antarctica is now wrapping up. As we await a final season report on the work and findings this season from the project research team, here are some interactive "image sliders" that convey so much of what has transpired over the ~35 day Weddell seal pup nursing period on the Ice. The sliders were created in 2021, and are also currently available in our field blog's "Interactive!" section.
This image slider concept was developed and the sliders created by project multimedia specialist Jeremy Schmidt, (with a tip o' the hat to the the Katmai National Park grizzly bear project). The photos for these sliders were taken by researcher Jesse DeVoe, and data supplied by Prof. Jay Rotella and the research team. Because the mass (weight) of Weddell seal moms and pups changes so dramatically during the approximately 35 day nursing period, Image Sliders are a great way to see those changes interactively. To kick off the image sliders presentation, here is a short video by the project's lead scientist Prof. Jay Rotella about mom/pup mass transfer while using the new image sliders, followed by the interactive image sliders themselves, which can be adjusted with cursor (computer) or touch (on a touch screen):
